How Hospitals Prepared for the Super Bowl

When large sporting events like the Super Bowl occur, nearby hospitals and medical facilities not only need to be prepared for injured players – they also need to be prepared for the thousands of fans who may also suffer injuries.

Many things could go wrong in the days leading up to and at the event: car accidents from the extra traffic, burns from firing up the grill, or alcohol-related injuries from fans having a little too much fun. The doctors, nurses, and other medical staff need to be prepared for it all.

HCA's facilities in Downtown Houston planned ahead for an increase in ICU and ER visits. Their leadership teams also worked with city officials for maps of road closures to update their first responder plans.

Becker’s Hospital Review covers how two other Houston hospitals – Memorial Hermann and Houston Methodist – prepared for the event. From keeping extra staff onsite to updating incident plans, they had all their zones covered.
