Why Nurses Week Matters & When to Celebrate
What is National Nurses Week, and when is it held? Starting on May 6th — also known as National Nurses Day — and extending through May 12th, Nurses Week is a time to recognize and honor the dedication and hard work of nursing professionals of all types, in all settings, everywhere across the U.S., and beyond.
It's a celebration that goes back decades, and one that grows bigger and more inclusive with each passing year. First held in the 1950s, Nurses Day was officially recognized by the U.S. government in 1982. And the first modern Nurses Week launched a decade later, thanks to the work of the American Nurses Association.
Keeping Care in Motion for Nurses Week 2026
The ANA also announces a new theme for each year's Nursing Week. In 2026, that theme is The Power of Nurses™, which recognizes nursing's impact not just in healthcare, but on the lives of pretty much everyone across the country.
And, inspired by the ANA, we also hold our own celebration each year here at HealthTrust, with a unique Nurses Week theme honoring the thousands of nursing professionals who work with us to keep patient care moving forward each day.
This year's theme — The Rhythm of Care Powered By Nurses — is our way of spreading the word on how nurses keep care in motion. It’s also an opportunity for everyone in our network to thank nurses for the hard work they do, and to provide support and inspiration to keep that rhythm going strong, all year long.
