Support & ‘Comfort during Difficult Moments’
A nurse for seven years, Diana has been part of the HealthTrust team for just eight months. Yet, that's been plenty of time to become a standout nurse in the facility where she works, HCA HealthONE Presbyterian St. Luke's, one of the biggest and best-known hospitals in Colorado.
Described as gentle, encouraging, and helpful — with seemingly endless patience — Diana is often praised for her ability to clearly explain important information, especially during difficult situations. She's also known for her efforts to put others at ease and help them feel supported, and fully able to understand their options.
And those skills are directly reflected in the philosophy she brings to work each day.
“The most rewarding part of working with patients is building meaningful relationships with them and their families during some of the most challenging times in their lives,” she told us.
“As an oncology nurse, I have the privilege of supporting patients through their treatment journey, celebrating their victories, and providing comfort during difficult moments."
Going Above & Beyond to Make a Difference
“This DAISY Award means so much to me,” said Diana about winning the award.
“It is an honor to know that my compassion and dedication to providing the best possible care have made a difference. I am truly grateful that the care I strive to give every patient has been recognized in such a meaningful way," she added.
“Receiving this recognition from a patient's family makes it especially meaningful because it reflects the impact we have during some of the most difficult moments in their lives.”
As meaningful as that recognition is, she’s also quick to share credit with her co-workers.
“I value working alongside such a dedicated and compassionate team,” she said. “Knowing that we can make a positive difference in our patients' lives, even in small ways, is what makes this work so fulfilling."
And Diana is known for going above and beyond to make that "positive difference" — including working to get important info from doctors and other clinicians to help keep the people under her care fully informed, a quality that requires communication and teamwork as well as patience and compassion.
‘Always Lead with Compassion’
But as meaningful as it is to win such a prestigious award, for Diana, it’s only one part of a much bigger commitment.
“Winning a DAISY Award is an incredible honor," she told us, "but what truly motivates me to keep making a difference in healthcare is my patients and their families.”
“Every day, I have the opportunity to provide care during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Knowing that my kindness, support, and dedication can bring comfort and make a meaningful impact reminds me why I became a nurse. This recognition inspires me to remember my ‘why’ of what made me go into healthcare.”
Finally, as someone who’s described as a model nurse, and what other RNs should aspire to, what advice does Diana have for other nursing professionals?
“Always lead with compassion,” she said. “Clinical skills and knowledge are essential, but it's the way you make patients feel that they will remember most.”
