The U.S. added 138,000 jobs in May, furthering indicating that the country is approaching the tightest labor market seen in years. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.3%, the lowest level seen since May 2001.
Healthcare employment grew by 24,000 jobs in May, with hospitals adding 7,000 jobs and 13,000 jobs being added within ambulatory health care services. Job growth in healthcare has averaged 22,000 per month thus far in 2017, compared with an average monthly gain of 32,000 in 2016. Although average monthly healthcare job creation monthly has slowed in 2017, there are nearly 600K unfilled healthcare job openings. Demand continues to outpace supply, with the labor force on its way toward full employment.
