No matter where you live, children’s back to school shopping lists contain many of the same items: pens for writing, markers for drawing, and tissues for when the child inevitably catches a cold. To help keep children healthy throughout the school year, Nurse Ruth Gallagher shares six back to school health tips.
Nurse Gallagher is the Director of Nursing Academic Services at Utica College, and her first tip is to teach children proper hand washing. Although children know to wash their hands after using the restroom, they may not know to wash their hands after sneezing, coughing, or before eating.
Children are sharing classrooms with an average of 24 other people, so germs can spread quickly through sharing school supplies or touching surfaces. Nurse Gallagher mentions that teaching children to wash their hands long enough and often enough can help keep them healthy throughout the school year.
