October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While it is important to raise money for breast cancer research, it is also important to give breast cancer survivors the opportunity to share their stories with other women.
Janet St. James shared her breast cancer experience with LifeSigns after her one-year anniversary of being cancer free. What is the most important information she would like to share with other women?
“Have regular doctor checkups,” she says. “And while I’m on the subject, don’t postpone your mammogram.”
Janet underwent a double mastectomy, reconstruction, and numerous other surgeries in addition to the chemotherapy and radiation. Even after receiving a clean bill of health, she still experiences side effects such as “chemo brain” and swelling from lymphedema from time to time.
