One Milestone After Another: Celebrating the Career of Division Vice President Randy Garcia

And perhaps no individual exemplifies that tradition better than Randy Garcia, a leader who’s helped spearhead some of our biggest achievements while steadily moving up the ladder to become a HealthTrust Division Vice President.
It's all part of a truly inspiring career: After serving in the army, Randy was hired as an emergency department RN at San Antonio's renowned Methodist Hospital, where he worked his way up to Coordinator of Critical Care and Critical Care Educator. He then joined the company that eventually became HealthTrust. And now, he's entering yet another stage — literally — as a full-time musician!
Helping Grow HealthTrust into a Household Name
In the 25 years since he joined HealthTrust and HCA, Randy has been instrumental in helping implement many of the innovations that have propelled HealthTrust to the top of the healthcare staffing industry.
Among his most memorable achievements, Randy cites his role in implementing Workforce, our groundbreaking reporting platform that shows clinical data in real-time. He's equally proud of his work helping his former employer Methodist Hospital evolve into the Southwestern U.S.A.'s "elite CV ECMO service line" — a goal he'd go on to help other facilities achieve, too.
And maybe most notably, Randy was also a key player in HealthTrust’s shift to developing our own staffing networks, and in expanding those services to include allied as well as nursing.
“It was a game changer,” he recalled. “My team and I built trust, responded with accomplishments, solved problems, kept our word, earned respect, advocated for our hospitals, held ourselves accountable, and never quit.”
Taking Inspiration from Leaders & Nurturing Others
As impressive as those achievements are, Randy is quick to give credit to the leaders who have inspired him — notably, HealthTrust COO Steve Wright and CEO Brendan Courtney, whose “vision, organization, goals, and leadership” he credits for syncing the company's local and travel staffing departments.
“Steve and Brendan brought us together as a unified team where we could flourish and support each other,” he said. “We all gained from our cumulative successes.”
He also extends that spirit of inclusiveness to other leaders on the HealthTrust team, many of whom he's helped guide to their current roles.
“The other thing for which I am extremely proud is the ability I was given to identify, develop, and maintain great talent,” he said, naming Billie Mosley, Kristopher David, Heather Serrano, Quiondra Bell, Kelly Moore, Marcus Guyden, Michelle Tillman, and Adriene Tanguma as some of the leaders whose careers he's seen thrive at HealthTrust.
From RN to Leader to Musician: Randy's Next Stage
Although Randy’s departure is tough news here at HealthTrust, it's also a source of inspiration. And that's because his career isn't ending, but entering another exciting chapter as he gears up to become a full-time touring musician.
“I am the bassist for the Chuck Wimer Band out of San Antonio,” he told us. “We will be traveling all over Texas and the southwest performing and recording our music, and touring in Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Colorado. We're also working on a tour in Europe.”
And what does this next stage promise? “Not much rest, but a lot of fun!”
