Congratulations to Robert B., the latest HealthTrust RN to win the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses! Known for his helpfulness and ability to bond with patients, families, and co-workers alike, Robert recently shared his thoughts about winning, what keeps him motivated, and more.
A ‘People Person’ Who Forges Unforgettable Bonds
Described by patients and families as unlike any other nurse they’ve encountered, Robert truly sets a high standard of care and compassion. And in his role as an RN in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), that level of quality matters — and is appreciated by those he interacts with.
For patients and their loved ones, Robert’s skills go beyond the ability to deliver reassuring, life-saving care. In their words, he’s incredibly gifted at making people feel informed, heard, and able to access help in challenging situations, while providing the hope and strength they need to navigate care during difficult times.
Robert is also described as a unique presence in the ICU, and not just for his breadth of knowledge and attention to detail but also for his unmatched ability to communicate and enable understanding in a way that’s reassuring and empathetic.
And that appreciation is mutual! In fact, to Robert, it’s what motivates him to do the best possible job he can, day in and day out.
“As a people person, I love that I meet people from all walks of life,” he told us. “It makes the day really interesting and enjoyable.”
‘The People I Get to Work With … Make Me Smarter’
Currently working within our North Florida Division, Robert has been in healthcare for almost three decades, and part of the HealthTrust network for almost nine years — or about a full third of his long and extraordinary career.
In other words, he’s a true veteran of patient care. And he uses that deep experience to excel in one of the departments where those skills can truly make a difference. Working in the CVICU, he makes an impact on everyone around him — co-workers as well as patients and their loved ones, who often describe him as part of the family.
Yet even with that long record of service, and demonstrated ability to make a tremendous impact, he’s still gratified and humbled to be presented with one of nursing’s highest honors, the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
“I am honored that someone thought so highly of my nursing efforts,” Robert said about winning. “What a pleasant and unexpected experience! My humble thanks and gratitude!!”
He’s also quick to share credit for his accomplishments with his co-workers. “The people I get to work with seem to make me smarter … breathing the same air, rubbing shoulders in the trenches with an incredible team!”
‘I Truly Enjoy the Privilege’ of Helping Others
And yet, for Robert, it truly does always come back to the patients. In fact, he describes providing care for them not as a job but a “privilege.”
He's also inspired by “getting to meet people where they are at and help them to a better place,” he told us. “It is gratifying to see happen. What a cool job!”
That positive, inspirational attitude shines through not just in his work, but also the advice he offers to other healthcare professionals: “Remember that patients are people — always, in all circumstances," he advises. "Always have mercy. What if that was YOU? Don’t forget!”
It’s clear, then, why both patients and co-workers respond so positively to Robert, and why his DAISY Award comes as no surprise to those who know him. Whether it’s caring for patients, supporting families and team members, or simply encouraging others, his unique passion for the job comes through in every action and every word.
“I truly enjoy the privilege of working with my talented peers and colleagues in this industry of helping others,” he told us. “Nursing Rules!"
