What to Know about Dialysis Jobs in 2025

Across the country, employers are hiring technicians and registered nurses at higher rates than ever. But what do dialysis RNs and techs do on a day-to-day basis, and how can you qualify to work dialysis jobs?

What Does a Dialysis Nurse Do?

Also referred to as nephrology nurses, dialysis nurses care for patients with kidney conditions using dialysis and hemodialysis treatments that remove toxins in the renal system. This can include operating a dialyzer and related equipment and accessories, as well as helping administer medication, preparing patients for procedures, and monitoring vital signs, among other clinical tasks.

What Does a Dialysis Technician Do?

Dialysis technicians set up and maintain dialysis machines, including cleaning them according to strict standards. Working under the supervision of a nurse or managing clinician, they may also help carry out clinical tasks like patient evaluation, monitoring, and education.

What Settings Do Dialysis RNs and Techs Work In?

Dialysis jobs can be found across virtually any setting, including hospitals, physician practices, and even dedicated dialysis centers. In addition, more and more secondary facilities are offering dialysis care, leading to a shift in the job market from the treatment of chronic patients in standalone clinics toward acute and emergency services in acute-care facilities.

Job Outlook: Is There a Shortage of Dialysis Workers?

As with all healthcare careers, the demand for dialysis care professionals is surging in recent years. And as the number of patients with kidney-related conditions rises, the demand for RNs and techs with specific dialysis experience will likely grow even more, making dialysis a good bet for a dependable, long-lasting career.

What Qualifications Do You Need to Work Dialysis Jobs?

So, how do you land a dialysis job? What qualifications and certifications do you need? For a full-time dialysis tech job, you should be a Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician® (CCHT®). You'll also probably need Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and at least one year of recent dialysis experience.

For dialysis RN jobs, you’ll need the same — a current license from the state where you live, plus BLS certification and a year of recent experience in dialysis care. It also helps if you're a Certified Nephrology Nurse® (CNN®), Certified Dialysis Nurse® (CDN®), or hold other major certifications.
