Healthcare Leads Job Creation in September Amid Broad U.S. Workforce Reduction

September 2017 Employment Report.jpg

While the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Report revealed that U.S. payrolls lost 30,000 jobs in September, the healthcare sector continued to display steady growth, adding 22,500 jobs last month. The below-trend national job creation was likely impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Growth within healthcare remained on the same relative pace in September, contributing an average of 27,000 jobs per month for the last 12 months. Gains within healthcare were seen largely within ambulatory care (24,700); hospitals contributed 4,500 jobs. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate dropped to 4.2%, the lowest level since December 2000.
