What Is National Kidney Month?

National Kidney Month is a yearly event that offers instructions and inspiration on how to live a “kidney-healthy lifestyle,” in the words of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The goal is to encourage people to get familiar with the basics of renal health, and to consult their healthcare professionals about whether they should get tested for kidney disease.

When Is National Kidney Month 2025?

Each year in March, National Kidney Month is celebrated across the United States — in hospitals and healthcare facilities, schools and educational centers, public health centers and, of course, social media, where it’s promoted by organizations like the NIDDK and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

How Can You Help Promote National Kidney Month?

At HealthTrust, we’re celebrating National Kidney Month and the incredible dialysis pros — like you — who make a difference every day! Join the fun by sharing, following, and snagging dialysis career tips all month long on our social channels like Facebook, LinkedIn, and X.

The National Kidney Foundation, one of the largest promoters of National Kidney Month, is also helping raise awareness in a number of ways, including library of resources of ads, posters, videos, Zoom backgrounds, social media, and more!

Why Dialysis Care Matters to National Kidney Month

In addition to raising awareness of renal health, National Kidney Month is also the perfect time to focus on the nurses who carry out the day-to-day care that makes it possible. Also called nephrology, dialysis care is surging in the United States thanks to improved technology and a better understanding of kidney health and the conditions that affect it, as well as the growing number of aging citizens with chronic disease.

As a result, demand is quickly rising for dialysis nurses. And that’s led to an increase in job opportunities, especially in acute/emergency dialysis services in acute care facilities where front-lines kidney care takes place. It's also led to an increase in resident programs to introduce new grads to dialysis care.

What Is a Dialysis Nurse, and What Do They Do?

Also referred to as nephrology nurses, dialysis nurses specialize in the care of patients with kidney disease, primarily via dialysis and hemodialysis treatment (processes that remove toxins in the renal system). They also provide a range of related tasks such as condition monitoring, administering and charting medications, and assessing and monitoring vital signs, among other tasks.

What Are the Benefits of Working in Dialysis Care?

Why work dialysis jobs? Many nurses who work in nephrology find it rewarding because they often work with the same patients over an extended period of time, and giving them the chance to bond and see the impact of their work. This has the added value of boosting patient satisfaction, which researchers have directly connected to improved clinical outcomes.

In addition, dialysis care isn't just limited to chronic care. Because so many acute-care facilities are integrating renal care into their offerings, demand for skilled RNs to work in those roles is likely to increase, too. That makes nephrology a great bet for career longevity and future opportunities.
