Why Healthcare Employee Wellbeing Matters during Halloween & the Holiday Season
Halloween is when the holiday season really kicks off, ushering in a months-long stretch that’s filled with festivities, shopping, special events, and lots of travel. It all combines for busy hospitals, where shifts can be long, hectic, and stressful.
And that makes it the perfect time to get centered and make sure you’re ready for what’s right around the corner. After all, providing the best care begins with taking care of yourself — and especially during busy times like the holidays.
What’s it like working in nursing or healthcare during Halloween?
Working as a nurse during Halloween, or an allied clinician, can be busier than normal. And that means the whole season, since Halloween parties begin several weekends early, and continue into the holiday seasons after that.
But working as a nurse or clinician during Halloween is also a unique time to connect with others and make memories! Whether it’s cheering up a patient or competing with co-workers for best costume, here’s how to keep Halloween fun and festive, while also focusing on staying centered and feeling your best.
The season is just as active behind the scenes for healthcare recruiters, HR teams, and administrative staff who work tirelessly to ensure facilities stay fully staffed and supported through the holiday rush.
A Season of Caring for Yourself: Tips for Nurses & Clinicians Working Halloween Shifts
1. Practice daily wellness with healthy habits
Whether you call it wellness, self-care, active living, or another term for looking after yourself, these are the daily essentials that make you feel better about yourself. They may be tough at first, but making them daily habits, and it’ll be hard to imagine what life was like without them.
Healthy daily habits include:
- Stay hydrated with a reliable, spill-proof tumbler
- Eat simple and nutritious meals when you can
- Take short breaks when you’re able, and then doing stretches, steps, or yoga
- Find a shift buddy you can take breaks with and talk about your day
- Follow the 3-2-1 sleep method — it's tough, but it pays off!

2. Be prepared
Whether you're a nurse, clinician, or administrator, make sure you’re ready for anything with stocked-up supplies for holiday-related injuries and emergencies (including allergic reactions to costumes and makeup).
Mental preparation is also critical — in other words, being centered and feeling your best. And a big part of that is being able to set your schedule in advance, to make sure you have the time off you want (and deserve) throughout the holidays.
-
Pro tip: As a nurse or clinician, it’s easier to set your per diem shift schedule in the Go HWS Mobile App!
3. Get in the Halloween spirit
Missing a Halloween party or two because of work? Just remember, whether you're a clinical professional or recruiter working overtime, you’re needed right where you are, helping patients and communities during a busy time. And one way to stay positive it all is getting in the spirit while you’re at work.
-
Dress-up. Many hospitals encourage healthcare employee wellness (and patient happiness) by letting you wear costumes on Halloween. Just make sure to choose one that's practical and doesn’t interfere with movement.
-
Spooky tunes. What’s more festive than a spooky song mix? From novelty songs to movie themes, getting a little creative with your music mix can lead to smiles and fun chats. Just make sure music is permitted where you’re playing it!
-
Decorations. Put up some Halloween decorations to spice up your workplace, in places that it’s allowed. Keep it lighthearted — think orange lights, laughing skeletons and grinning Jack o’ lanterns rather than violent or disturbing art.
-
Festive activities. Have a quick team meeting to exchange simple gifts, treats, or just have a fun Halloween break. Or host an after-hours potluck or happy hour outing, or a visit to the local cidery or pumpkin patch earlier in the week.
-
Team treats. If you love to share treats — whether you make them yourself or buy them at the local store — there’s no better time for it than Halloween! (But remember, some folks may want alternatives to sugary sweets.)
4. Treat yourself by redeeming your VIP rewards
Halloween is also a great time to redeem your HealthTrust VIP Rewards for decorations, costumes, games, or whatever you need for spooky season. And if there’s not enough time in 2026, get an early start by making a plan for next year!
