HCA Healthcare Announces More than $1 Million in Grants

Our dedication to caring like family extends beyond our hospitals’ walls into the communities where we live and work. During this unprecedented time, we are honored to strengthen relationships with neighbors in our hometowns. The HCA Healthcare Foundation, the philanthropic arm of HCA Healthcare, and a tax exempt trust affiliated with HCA Healthcare will provide more than $1 million in grants to local community organizations to aid in COVID-19 relief efforts.

“Like our colleagues that are serving on the frontlines of this crisis by providing lifesaving care to patients, local organizations are also stepping up to address the needs of their communities in remarkable ways, including emergency response, addressing food shortages and providing childcare for healthcare workers and first responders,” said Sam Hazen, chief executive officer of HCA Healthcare. “HCA Healthcare is honored to support our communities during this unprecedented time of rapidly changing needs.”

The one-time grants of $10,000 to $250,000 have been distributed to community partners that are focused on the COVID-19 emergency response and food banks, including:

United Way of the Coastal Bend COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund (Corpus Christi, Texas)
Communities in Schools of San Antonio (San Antonio, Texas)
YMCA of Greater Kansas City (Kansas City, Missouri)
Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana (New Orleans, Louisiana)
San Antonio Food Bank (San Antonio, Texas)
Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley (Pharr, Texas)
North Texas Food Bank (Plano, Texas)
Tarrant Area Food Bank (Fort Worth, Texas)
United Way of Broward County COVID-19 Campaign (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)
United Way of Miami-Dade’s Miami Pandemic Response Fund (Miami, Florida)
Mile High United Way (Denver, Colorado)

Food Bank of the Rockies (Denver, Colorado)

“We are so honored by this gift of love,” said Natalie Jayroe, president and chief executive officer of Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana. “It is because of generous support from partners like HCA Healthcare that our staff and volunteers will be able to provide meals and emergency food in the weeks and months to come for those most impacted by this emergency.”

Additional grants will be made to HCA Healthcare community partners in Florida, Colorado and Kansas.

Partnering Together in the Dynamic Ventilator Reserve

President Trump announced a new initiative for hospitals to lend unused ventilators to areas of need, called the "Dynamic Ventilator Reserve", during a meeting on Tuesday, April 14th, with healthcare executives at the White House.

The new public-private partnership is aimed at allowing hospitals to lend unused ventilators to areas that need them treat patients who have contracted COVID-19. There are currently 60,000 unused ventilators in hospitals across the country. The new program will help get the critical devices to areas that need them.

U.S. International Development Finance Corporation CEO Adam Boehler, who is leading the initiative, thanked Sam Hazen from HCA Healthcare and Lloyd Dean (SP) from Common Spirit for leading this effort with the AHA and the Federation of American Hospitals.

Sam shared how proud HCA Healthcare is to be a part of this private-public sector partnership and that he thinks that’s the only way fundamentally to solve this crisis. During the briefing he talked about one of the guiding principles HCA had when it went into this COVID-19 battle was to find partnerships, partnerships with other components of the industry, partnerships with other health systems, but partnerships with governments, both local and federal.

In addition to HCA Healthcare, more than a dozen healthcare executives participated, including other leaders from Premier, LifePoint Health, NYU Langone, the American Hospital Association, the Federal Association of Hospital, and the Cleveland Clinic.

Community Gathers in Prayer and Support for Cartersville Medical Center

In the midst of the fight against COVID-19, hundreds assembled in their cars outside the Cartersville Medical Center, an HCA Healthcare-affiliated facility to pray and to offer their support for caregivers and patients who find themselves at the center of the war against the coronavirus pandemic. The emotional assembly, which displayed a supportive outpouring of love, was received as patients could see the guests from their windows and staff watched from the lawn and the rooftop.

In an interview with Fox 5, Michelle Anderson, who has worked at the hospital for 26 years, shared, "I've never been more proud to work here in all the years I've worked here, the community outpouring is unbelievable."

HCA Healthcare Teams Up with Google Cloud to Launch the National COVID-19 Response Portal

Our parent company, HCA Healthcare is teaming up with Google Cloud and SADA to launch a data portal for the COVID-19 pandemic. The open data platform will help accelerate analysis and response by aggregating data on ICU bed and ventilator utilization, testing results, and total number of patient visits to America’s hospital systems.

HCA Healthcare is proud to collaborate with Google Cloud on the announcement of the COVID-19 National Response Portal, an open data platform built and operated by SADA. Running on Google Cloud, the platform is intended to promote data-sharing about the COVID-19 pandemic and how it is spreading in an effort to help hospitals and communities prepare and respond.

“COVID-19 presents a unique and significant challenge to healthcare providers, and collaboration and coordination is more important than ever to help ensure the best possible response,” said Dr. Edmund Jackson, HCA Healthcare’s chief data officer. “While COVID-19 has driven us apart physically, we will respond to it by coming together digitally. We are proud to work alongside Google Cloud to create a platform to help address this urgent public health challenge.”

The COVID-19 National Response Portal is intended to enable healthcare providers across the country to safely share and display anonymous, aggregated metrics from hospital systems into a single platform to show a complete and real-time view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data can be submitted each day from hospital systems across the United States and will be focused on metrics such as:

ICU bed supply and utilization;
ventilator supply and utilization;
total numbers of positive, negative, and pending COVID-19 test results;
and total numbers of healthy patients who have been discharged.

The platform will also have the ability to leverage publicly available datasets, such as data on local shelter-in-place policies, and traffic or mobility patterns, to help shed light on how public behaviors and policies may impact the spread of COVID-19.

“Healthcare organizations need access to accurate and timely information around the country to plan for care and respond to COVID-19,” said Philip Moyer, Vice President, Industry Sales at Google Cloud. “We’re proud to team up with HCA Healthcare and SADA in the launch of this important new data resource for care providers on the front lines.”

“As healthcare providers, we are all battling the same crisis,” said Michael Wargo, vice president of emergency preparedness at HCA Healthcare. “However, we are being faced with COVID-19 at different times and levels of severity. By pooling our data into one cohesive platform, we can share best practices to better prepare communities across the country for this unprecedented pandemic.”

As a learning health system, HCA Healthcare uses data from approximately 35 million annual patient encounters to improve care through research and innovation. HCA Healthcare, which will provide statistical data from its 185 hospitals, structured in a manner to comply with HIPAA and other applicable restrictions, has invited groups representing approximately 4,000 hospitals across the country to join and share data on the platform.

HCA Healthcare, SADA and Google Cloud are in the process of sharing additional details and seeking to onboard other hospitals. The platform is expected to go live to the public next week.

Reserve Medical Grade Masks for Healthcare Workers and First Responders

The CDC has issued a recommendation for citizens to use cloth face coverings in “public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.”

This is another step to help reduce the potential transmission of COVID-19, especially from people who show no symptoms.

We kindly remind members of our community to use non-medical reusable masks. Please do your part to help make sure medical grade masks stay in the hands of our healthcare professionals and first responders as they continue caring during COVID-19.

Coronavirus Patient Believes TriStar Greenview was Prepared

The first person to be diagnosed with COVID-19 in Warren County, KY is now recovering at home and credits the preparedness of caregivers at TriStar Greenview, an HCA Healthcare-affiliated hospital. David Broderick, 73, was recently diagnosed with COVID-19, after recently traveling to Colorado. However, he is thankful for the attentive staff who took the necessary precautions to ensure a quick recovery.
