Celebrating National Doctors' Day 2025

Every March, National Doctors’ Day provides the opportunity to show appreciation for the doctors in our lives. Whether they’re family, friends, co-workers, or just fellow members of the community, physicians and specialists are essential parts of our lives. And Doctors’ Day is our chance to offer them some well-deserved thanks!

What Is National Doctors' Day?

National Doctors’ Day is a yearly celebration of doctors and the essential work they do. After all, doctors are at the heart of healthcare, serving as our guides during many of life's most important events. And for almost 100 years, Doctors' Day has been dedicated as the official time to thank them for that service.

Why Is National Doctors' Day Celebrated?

Doctors absolutely deserve our gratitude for the incredible work they do. Beyond that, their dedication shines even brighter with the impact they make on communities and their patients each day. That makes it all the more important to support physicians, and to help them understand how important and appreciated they are!

When Is National Doctors' Day 2025?

National Doctors’ Day will be held on March 30th, 2025, just as it has been for almost 100 years. Eudora Brown Almond observed the first Doctors’ Day in 1933 in Georgia; 25 years later, the U.S. Congress marked the date in an official resolution. And in 1990, President George Bush signed a bill that recognized Doctors’ Day as part of U.S. law.

March 30th was chosen because it marks the first time that anesthesia was administered by Dr. Crawford W. Long, way back in 1842. That event ushered in an age of much safer and effective surgery, revolutionizing human healthcare and even longevity. As such, Doctors’ Day promotes not just patient care but the role of physicians in innovating new ways to improve health and well-being for us all.

How Is National Doctors' Day Celebrated?

Today, the tradition has grown to a full week, with Doctors’ Day now holding a place of honor within National Physicians Week, a weeklong celebration of doctors by everyone from patients and families to employers, colleagues, co-workers, and entire communities.

And while the philosophy is the same as it was back in 1933 — thanking the doctors in your life and holding gatherings or ceremonies in their honor — the methods have evolved a bit in that time, including not just hand-written greeting cards but also social media posts, thoughtful emails, and Zoom-based parties.

  • Did you know? From its very beginning, National Doctors’ Day has been symbolized by the red carnation.

How Can You Support National Doctors' Day?

How can you join in the celebration and show physicians how much you appreciate them? The most common way is with a simple thank-you card or letter, or a shout out on social media. If you work with a physician or know one personally, you can show them you care with a simple act of kindness or a few words of gratitude.

  • Looking for inspiration? Start with this sample copy: "Dear Dr. __________, thank you for everything you do! We appreciate your dedication to our team and to the health of our communities, and you inspire us each and every day. Happy Doctors’ Day!"

If you’re going the social media route, you can share experiences or stories of what doctors mean to you, or how someone has made an impact on your life. And don’t forget to use hashtags like #NationalDoctorsDay, #NationalPhysiciansWeek and #TogetherWeThrive to get your story out there in front of everyone!
