Happy Nephrology Nurses Week 2025 from HealthTrust!

September 14-20 is Nephrology Nurses Week 2025, a celebration of nurses who work in this important field, and a time to raise general awareness of kidney health. Here’s everything you need to know about Nephrology Nurses Week and how to help support the cause!

What is National Nephrology Nurses Week?

Nephrology Nurses Week is a full week dedicated to recognizing, honoring, and celebrating nurses who work in nephrology — and those who aspire to, too!

A specialty devoted to the care of patients with kidney conditions, nephrology includes dialysis care nurses working in acute care facilities, as well as those who work in surgical and transplant jobs.

When is Nephrology Nurses Week celebrated, and why?

Nephrology Nurses Week 2025 is celebrated during the second full week of September. In 2025, it falls on September 14th through 20th.

That time of year that was chosen as a counterpoint to National Kidney Month, held six months earlier in March, to give kidney health awareness a year-round presence.

Why Nephrology Nurses Week Matters: A Few Important Facts about Kidney Disease ...

And that year-round awareness matters! One of the reasons why nephrology nurses are in such high demand is the rapid growth of kidney disease. For instance, did you know that:

  • One in seven American adults — or roughly 35.5 million people — may have chronic kidney disease.
  • Nine in every 10 of those people may not be aware they have the condition.
  • The global death rate from chronic kidney disease rose by 24% between 1990 and 2021.
  • Although “slightly more common” in women and people 65 years and older, kidney disease can affect all genders and ages, including kids and teens.

... and some important facts about the nurses who treat it

The growth in kidney disease in the U.S. is driving demand for dialysis care nurses, as is the ongoing nurse shortage, Here are a few more facts you should know:

  • Nephrology has been recognized as a nursing specialty since 1973, with the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) formalizing that status in 1992.
  • Nephrology nurses work in many types of settings — most notably acute care centers in recent years.
  • An estimated 88.88% of nephrology nursing jobs require a Bachelor's degree, while almost 10% now require a Master's.

How to Celebrate Nephrology Nurses Week

So, how can you join in the celebration? Here are a few good ideas:

  • Say thanks to the nephrology nurses in your life — and if you don’t know any, consider sending thank-you notes to your hospital's nephrology department.
  • Spread awareness by word of mouth, buying merch, or social media — for instance, you could share this article!
  • Get educated about kidney disease so you can help prevent it — both for yourself and your loved ones.
  • Volunteer in your community, either in support of patients, nurses, or local healthcare providers.
  • Offer donations to groups like the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) or the American Kidney Fund (AKF).
  • If you're a nurse or clinician, attend events or webinars, or take CE courses in dialysis care to stay up-to-date on treatment protocols.

Celebrate Nephrology Nurses Week with a New Job or Nursing Residency!

Of course, the best way to celebrate is with a new job in dialysis care! You can always find plenty at the HealthTrust jobsite.

And if you're seeking an entry point into this exciting career, our Dialysis Nurse Residency Program is a great place to start. A special program that offers specialized training in the skills, equipment, and day-to-day tasks that acute dialysis care requires, the program is also open to new nurses and students.

“Because the dialysis residency program was such an extensive orientation and training, I felt as prepared as I could be to work on my own,” said one happy graduate of the program.
